A Walk in the Woods - Westcoast style!

We went to Cathedral Grove near Port Alberni on Saturday. It was great to show the kids some BIG trees. the one we are posed in front of is the biggest in the park and is approximately 800 years old. We all fit inside another cedar that had a burned out core. Our whole family - inside a tree!

The kids enjoyed exploring and loved learning about 'Butt Rot' (I wonder why they liked hearing about that!) and fungi. Evelyn especially, asked good questions and made great observations. While sunny, it was cold! Autumn is certainly here!

Ryan got some great pics using a filter on his iPhone.

WOW! The trees are so HUGE!!! Just imagine all the forests used to look like that! Wow! I love how you used the juxdeposition of size in your photo's. The one with ethan staring at the tree is very well composed. I really like it.

Butt rot is a type of fungus that invades the roots of trees. It weakens the trunk and makes it easier for them to fall in high winds. It can survive in the soil for up to 100 years and will infect a tree through any open wound.

Ryan took the bulk of the photos.
