Evelyn's dance class

I got the pleasure of watching Evelyn dance a couple weeks ago (It's taking me a while to get a chance to blog stuff) They did better than when we watched in the fall. Ethan was especially excited to be able to go to dance class. He counted down the days and SO wanted to participate. He had a really difficult time sitting and watching. Much of the recital was spent with him in the foyer repeating with him "I have been given a spirit of self-control" "I will control myself" "I will sit quietly". Then, we'd return for about 5 min before his desire to participate became too much to bear again and out we'd go. I let him join in for the last 5 minutes and he really enjoyed himself.

Evelyn put a lot of effort into her movements, but needs to work on following the teacher :-) She spent about 5 minutes sitting on the floor, spinning around and around. One of her favorite part was playing "What time is it Mr.Wolf?" with the favorite 'time' being "Lunch Time". I'm glad she enjoys herself. I think they will both take the class next year.

A video from our visit

This is from our visit to K-A at the beginning of March. This the first chance I've had to do anything with these clips. I love seeing the kids reaction to the plane taking off on the way there.

The world from Evelyn's point of view

Evelyn had a blast taking pictures on her own a little while ago. It was interesting to see what she thought was photo worthy. Many of her pics are blurry, but a few turned out really well. Her favorite pic will not be shared as she decided that a picture of a urine filled toilet - complete with TP was the best thing she captured on 'film'. She breaks into hysterical laughter whenever she talks about that picture....potty humour....they grow out of this, right?
Here is a close up of a mosiac craft we did together.

A close up of her Duplo blocks.

Our plant from a 4 yr old point of view.

A photo of a portrait in National Geographic of a 'cotton queen'.

A view out the window through our window sheer.

Play Time

Some pics from Play group and from the kids playing at West Ed Mall.

'Dressy Western' Old Time Photos

We went to West Edmonton Mall yesterday and had a great time. The kids were very well behaved! We decided to have a little fun and posed for a 'Dressy Western' style photo. Both kids really enjoyed themselves. As I load these pics, Ethan is on my lap pointing to Evelyn and saying "Evelyn is like a Princess". She felt like one too! We may make this a recurring tradition every year or two.

In the slide show below, I have cropped the main photo into portraits.

The Fruits of the Spirit.

Last month, K-A posted that she was going to do the love verse (1 Corinthians 13: 4-7) with her kids in honour of Valentines day. I decided to do the same, and the kids and I worked on memorizing those verses. We added one quality of love each day, and they each got a mini M&M for each point they remembered. It went well. Evelyn still remembers most of the points, Ethan remembers 'Love is Patient, Love is Kind". I use the verse for correcting behaviour and it works well.

This month, I plan to do the Fruits of the Spirit. They are all character qualities that I want to develop in the kids (and myself...) I am not sure that I can make them understand the abstract qualities of the 'fruits', but maybe one day it will make sense to them. The kids each coloured 3 pieces of the same fruit. The plan is to have them stick a piece into the 'basket' as they remember them. The fruits on the side are kind of like an answer sheet, but they'll have to remember what each fruit stands for.

It is bitterly cold outside today(-38 plus windchill), and all schools were cancelled. Ryan had to report to work, but won't have any students today. So, Evelyn's pre-school was also cancelled. What to do? I googled 'Fruits of the Spirit' and found some wonderful resources. Both kids really got into the cadence call. It goes like this:

I don’t know what you’ve been told…
Galatians’ got the fruit of gold.
Patience, joy, love, peace and faith…
With gentleness He’ll get the praise.

Self-control with kind and good…
We’ll be like Jesus said we should…
Ask me what would Jesus do?
Galatians 5 Verse 22

Sound off: Galatians 5
Bring it on down: Verse 22

Galatians 5 Verse 22

WE'VE GOT- THE FRUIT!

(optional ending)
WE”VE GOT- (clap) - (stomp) - THE FRUIT!

Here is the linkto all the resources:

http://www.dltk-bible.com/jesus/fruit_of_the_spirit-index.htm

I love the translation in 'The Message' of this verse and the ones before it. It's a great juxtaposition of living for yourself and living for God (my comments in parenthesis):

Galatians 5:19-23.

"It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic show religion; paranoid lonliness; cutthroat competition; all-comsuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; and impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small minded and lopsided persuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. (Can you believe this was 2000 years ago!? It sounds like today!)

This isn't the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use our freedom this way, you will not inherit God's kingdom. (It's our choice how to act, but every choice has a consequence - good or bad)

But what happens when you live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard - things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way."

Then I looked for songs to help us memorize the verse. I came up with a simple and beautiful one that inspired me to try making a video to go with the first verse of the song. Here it is:

More pics

Picking up from the last post, I took the girls shopping on Wednesday. They enjoyed themselves and were well behaved. They were both riding in the basket of the cart. All went well until both decided to reach for a 'Wall-E' pillow case hanging at the end of an aisle. I was standing next to the cart at the time, and it tipped onto me! B was unharmed, Evelyn (as you can imagine) had a very dramatic reaction to the incident. She got a scrape on her ribs and a bruise on her knee. I have a large, deep bruise on my calf and ankle. I did not realize that carts could tip so easily! I thought the warnings to keep kids seated were to keep them from falling out when the cart moved. As we were still, I was not really thinking about them falling out. So, we all learned a good lesson! NO standing in a cart - EVER!

J seemed to be having a prolonged, and difficult time with his belly. He had a lot of gas, and was fussy for much of the time we were there. This meant that K-A was up with him most nights. As you can imagine, she was pretty tired.

I watched all the kids after bed on Wednesday while K-A and K went out on a little date. The first since J was born. Then, the next night, K-A and I quickly went to Value Village before it closed, then out for tea.

On Thursday, we went to Jungle Mania. The kids really enjoyed themselves and played hard for a couple hours. After, we took them to a cafe for lunch. They were all very well behaved. Evelyn's favorite part of JM was the twisty slide. She loved that a motion sensitive bird would start chirping and flapping it's wings whenever a child went down the slide.

As usual, Evelyn made several 'friends' while at JM. She makes friends very easily. When it was time to go, I told my kids 'first one out gets a Jelly Bean' and ALL the kids in the gym all sped for the exit! I ended up awarding the jelly bean to one of Evelyn's new friends. He won the race!

Mediating the interactions of 4 kids, and trying to keep my own exuberant kids quiet during the day so others could sleep was pretty stressful. I enjoyed the visit, but I can still feel that I'm holding my shoulders up near my ears!

To top off the stress, the Kelowna airport does not have luggage carts for free. You need a loonie or 4 quarters to free the cart from the holding pen. Why they do this, I have NO idea. I would not have minded, if they had a credit card reader or something. But, they don't. So, one of the visitor info staff was able to get me a cart on our arrival, but when we left, I had 2 quarters and 3 dimes in my wallet. I used my loonie on tea the night before! I mentioned my dilemma to one of the car rental guys, hoping he might help me lug 2 kids, 2 bags, 2 car seats, and 3 carry on bags the 100 metres to the terminal. I had just spent a chunk of money renting from his company... I think he needed a direct request, because my STRONG hint did not seem to sink in. So, I was essentially stranded until a kind, fellow traveller offered to carry the carseats. I was very thankful for him! Had it been anywhere else, where any unattended bag would not be considered a bomb, I would have just left a couple bags in sight and made 2 trips in stages until I reached the check in counter. That strategy would not work in an airport! So, whoever you are, thank you to my travelling helper! Failing grades to the customer service at Budget car rentals in Kelowna. I think I will be sending some constructive criticism to both the Kelowna airport and Budget Rentals.

My story does not end here. We needed to eat before the flight, and once past security, the only food is at a sit down White Spot. The meal was good, I spilled my pop all over the table, and as we finished the meal, both kids had to go to the bathroom. So, I rushed paying the cheque, and as we headed to the bathroom, the boarding call for our flight was announced. This would have been fine, except that Evelyn was expecting to be able to play on the little gym for a few minutes. Plans had to change, we needed to board! ... She did not take the change in plans well.

Imagine, if you will, a long line of passengers, all waiting to board. They are tired, weary, bored, and probably hoping to have a quiet, 55 min flight to Edmonton. Just as pre boarding ends, they see Evelyn, running toward them, SCREAMING at the top of her lungs, tears of rage streaming down her cheeks followed by her little brother and frazzled Mom. She is crying about anything and everything that she can reasonably protest. "I don't want to go on the plane. I don't want my ears to pop. I want to play on the playground...."

What would be going through your mind as a potential travel mate of this banshee?

There was very little build up to this tirade. Almost no warning for me to try to avert this scene. Now, I'm stuck in a very embarassing situation with few options. On trying to calm her by kneeling next to her, she pushed me over. Then, as I was getting up off the floor, she shoved Ethan down too. I gathered them, and our stuff, and headed to the bathroom. It took about 5-10 min to calm her down. I had her repeat "God has given me a spirit of self control" "I will control myself" "I will obey" "I will be calm". She apologized to me for pushing and being disrespectful, and to Ethan for being unkind and pushing. We gathered our stuff and headed to the gate.

We were the last people to board. The attendant at the gate asked "Are you the Mom that had to visit the bathroom?" What a diplomatic way to ask if these were the kids who caused such a big disruption! "Yes, that's us. I think we are under control now" was my reply.

The flight went well. At the end, a woman stopped to tell me I handled Evelyn's melt-down well. That was nice of her! It made me feel a bit better about the whole event. We waited for everyone to deplane before us. Ethan had pooped, so we stopped to change him. The kids dawdled in the exit and set off a motion alarm (you are not allowed to linger in that area). When we reached the bag carousel, it had stopped moving. Everyone was gone. I guess we took too long! It worked out okay though, because Westjet had collected all our stuff and had it waiting on a luggage cart at the bag counter (a free of charge cart - like most airports have...) and ready to go.

We stopped at Costco in Edmonton and arrived home around 8 pm. Whew! I'm not sure if I'm up to travelling with 2 kids on my own again. At least not when I have to lug car seats around too. Overall, they listened well. On the plane, they were very well behaved. Both seemed to like the take off and landing. We all enjoyed seeing the mountians. Maybe in a few more days, my shoulders will loosen enough for me to have a neck again!

A visit with Friends

We arrived safely on Monday afternoon. The kids travelled well - except for when I was signing out our rental car... We barely made it in time for our flight. I totally underestimated how long it would take to get to the airport from a store I wanted to stop at before going, and it took much longer to park and unload, get on the shuttle, load a cart at the airport again, put the car seats through the oversize luggage security check, lug the kids through security, RUN down the terminal to our gate, quickly stop to pee, and arrive at the gate as they were ending the pre-boarding time. We never had time for lunch! I am glad I packed lots of crackers and cheese sticks for the plane. Thankfully, they allowed a full sippy cup of juice to pass through security, so the kids had a bit to drink. They were so excited when the plane lifted off. With the low clouds, we could not see more than a couple glimpses of the mountains, but they stayed entertained watching Treehouse on the little TV's.

I had them in their knitted hoodies from their Grandma (Maralee). Ethan was exstatic when he saw he got to wear 'hanky sweater' that day. Both the kids got many compliments over their sweaters. (Hint hint, they'd like more pullover sweaters like those ones... ;-) )

Ethan's ear seems to be on the mend again. No more drainage, and he had no ear complaints on the plane. Today is his last antibiotic day, which will be nice because he really hates the flavour of this one.

The kids have gotten along quite well. Ethan is the odd man out most of the time, so he's been getting extra cuddles and extra shouts of "Ethan! stop touching!" or, "Sit down Ethan!" from the other kids.

Ethan really likes baby J. He calls him 'Baby' and 'her' all the time. Whenever he cries, Ethan asks "Is the baby okay?" He loves to give him kisses and hugs and starts giggling whenever J makes faces.

Evelyn and B have been playing together a fair bit. We went for a walk into town yesterday, and they held hands with both each other, and the other little boy that K was watching that day (Andrew). He was a little womanizer! It was pretty sweet to see them all holding hands though.

K-A and I went to her Toastmasters meeting last night. It was interesting. I can see how the skills can be transferred to many situations, and it teaches you to think on your feet and express yourself in a logical way. It's a bit like a game or contest, because they award ribbons for 'best table topic speaker' or 'best evaluator'. One woman shared a binder filled with her ribbons and certificates. They were obviously very important to her. Seeing her display made me think about getting a feeling of self worth from outside sources, which are fickle, or from your own inner sense of accomplishment. Perhaps the ribbons were a concrete and tangible representation of her personal sense of accomplishment.

The plan for today is for me to take the girls out for a girly shopping trip. Tomorrow, we plan to go to Jungle Mania in Salmon Arm, and Friday, we head home!

Snow, Sickness, Stories, and Scenes

We had a mild weekend last week. This was especially nice because the temps turned FRIGID around Tuesday. The weekend was around -5, but by Thursday, it was -38 in the morning! Evelyn's playschool was cancelled as the teacher could not start her car (it was plugged in too!)

Anyway, these are from the mild weekend. I took the kids to play at the park before I went to work. The next day, our friend Melissa took the kids to the park and I had the house to myself - alone - for about an hour. Wow. I think the last time I was alone at home for that long was when we bought the house and I was painting.

Evelyn wanted to try pulling Ethan in the sled. She did pretty well too!

I was supposed to work on Monday evening too, but around 11 am, Ethan started to spike a temp and was holding his head/ears saying "It hurts". He was totally clingy and crying a lot. He just got over an ear infection a couple weeks ago, and the eardrum has just sealed. I was not happy that we were headed down the same road again. I called and asked them to cover my shift so I could take him in to the Doctor. They were wonderful, and the day and night nurses each did a 12 hr shift so I could stay with Ethan.

I will pause here to tell the rest of his last ear infection story. I treated it very conservatively for many days. If you remember, it ruptured and was oozing clear yellow fluid with a bit of blood. He continued to have moderate fevers (around 38.0 - 38.5) and was miserable with the fevers. On day 3 after the rupture, the fluid turned milky green and his temps got higher. Now he was sitting in the 38.7 - 39.2 range. I took him in to the outpatient dept and he was started on Ancef, every 8 hrs for 10 days. There is a risk of developing meningitis once that fluid turned purulent (pussy) so I felt good about doing the antibiotics.

Within a day, his fevers stopped, and the oozing also stopped. At the one week check up, the hole was still there, but healing and his ear was still pink. At 2 weeks (after all 10 days of Abx were done) the drum was intact with scar tissue and was not pink. Yah! I thought. We are over this!

Nine days after completing the Abx, (on Monday) the fevers came back and he said his ear hurt. with the first ear infection, about 20 min after he got some Advil, he was back to normal and the fever was gone. This time, the Advil seemed uneffective and Tylenol worked better. I was concerned that the Advil was not bringing his temp down. So, I took him in to the Doctor office to get him looked at. He said Ethan's ears looked fine, but gave me some eardrops with Cipro (an antibiotic) and a steroid to put in every 6 hrs. Ethan hated those drops! (here's a tip: whenever giving ear drops, warm the bottle in a cup of warm water before instilling. This makes the drops more comfortable for the unlucky recipient) We continued with them and Ethan continued to spike occasional fevers around 38.5 for the next few days.

On Thursday, I took him to the chiropractor. This is a pic of him from Thurs morning. He was up every 2-3 hrs the night before, and had a fever around 38.8. In this pic, Ethan is telling me "I'm cold Mommy".
The Chiro showed me how to massage his eustacian tubes and made a small adjustment to his neck. Ethan tolerated the massage well. He even giggled and said it tickled. The Chiro mentioned that when the ears are acting up, the massage is usually painful. He looked in Ethans ears and said the Left one (the one that ruptured) looked a bit pink, but not angry red. I was relieved and happy that I learned a new technique that I could use to keep him comfortable on our flight next week (in 2 more sleeps now!). We went home, Ethan had a nap, and about an hour after the nap, he came up to me and said "Look at my ear Mommy". The too familiar drainiage was coming out of his newly healed left ear. I called the doctor office and left a message with the secretary asking if I should continue with the drops, or if we needed to change treatment. She called back saying the doctor wanted to see Ethan the next morning. So, in we went. His eardrum is indeed ruptured - again - and he is now on another antibiotic (Zithromax). I am happy that this one is only once a day! (No more waiting up until 11 pm so I can give him his night time dose!) His ear contines to drain clear yellow fluid, but he has not had another fever. When we get home from Armstrong, I will have his ear checked again. We may need to see a specialist about getting ear tubes - or grommets inserted. On the positive side, he will probably be more comfortable on the plane now that his ear can drain freely. What a week!

Ryan came home from Phoenix on Thursday night. He took some neat pics of the Grand Canyon. He went to a literacy convention there and met several authors and came home with several books. The kids enjoyed this one called 'Bigger'. It's all about growing up.

Evelyn created this scene this morning. She tells us "It's Victoria. Like where Casey lives" I think she did a great job! When Ryan took pictures, she brought out her watering can and said she wanted to make it rain! (How fitting is THAT for Victoria!?!)
I like that she had all the letter blocks lined up with the same colours facing out. I think it is the legislature with some trees in the background.

Dance Song Medley as Promised

This video os about 5 min long. I cut out over half of it. I hope you enjoy!
