playing at the park
Penny Carnival
My little Soccer Stars
Next year, the kids will be on different teams and Evelyn will actually play in a game or two.
In other news, I filled out Evelyn's Kindergarden registration yesterday and submitted her birth certificate. She is now officially registered as a Caslan School student for 2009/2010. Her teacher for next year (Miss Megan Deveraux) gave her a pack of picture books all about starting kindergarden. I look forward to reading them with her in August.

Ethan Recites a favorite story.
This is one of his favorite books. I love how he has learned the tonal inflictions I always use and copies them. He likes to add the actions too. This is not as fluid a recitiation as usual. I think he was distracted by the camera. I think this will be his entry for talent night (are doing that this year at Magna Bay...?)
Before, In process, and After
This has been my project of the last week. Every spare minute has been spent sanding, filling, repairing, sanding some more, priming, painting (first coat), painting (second coat), painting (touch ups). You can see on the gound in front, the soffits and fascia that blew off the house during two wind storms this winter. I'm waiting for a contractor to have time to come and fix that. I am NOT going up a ladder to the peak of my roof!
Next year, if/when the house is put on market, I think I'll put a few baskets of flowers on the rocks.
I like that the old windows now match the new ones. Now, Richard and Shane, take a good look at my roof. What do you think about those curling shingles? If you were looking at this house thinking of buying, would you think 'needs a new roof'?

End of year parties and vaccinations
The day before the party, Evelyn had her vaccinations. Wow. That went...not as well as I expected!
I told her about the upcoming appointment a few hours before. I wanted her to be warned, but not have time to really get worked up. When we arrived, there was a Doctor Play set that had a 'needle'. We practiced with that and she seemed okay with the 'pinch' she would be recieving. She played contentedly during the appt while the nurse asked all the development questions. She happily sat on my lap when needle time came. I had her arm held firmly in my hand and was trying to distract her with a new pack of 'littlest pet shop' trading cards. I thought it was going very well.
Then, she got poked.
She SCREAMED and flailed her body, arched her back, kicked her legs and arms and became a banshee. The needle came out and scraped her arm, she continued to scream and flail.
It was very dramatic. And very unexpected.
I eventually got her restrained in my arms again and we manageed to get the second shot into the same arm. After about 5 min, she calmed down to merely sniffing and wimpering.
Yikes!
The following day, her kind and loving little brother punched her in her arm when we were out shopping. Ouch! She managed to get under control fairly quickly. Now, she's back to normal.
I really hope she forgets this experience before she is due for any other shots. I think she has a few years before we have to do this again!
On the evening following Evelyn's ill-fated vaccinations, I went to a staff party while Ryan stayed home with the kids. It was fun to socialize with the staff. We were at one of the Doctors homes which he leases. It is on a lake and reminded me of Saltspring Island. We saw many different kinds of water birds, and a yearling black bear came to visit us as well! The bear sniffed around the perimeter, climbed a tree, and scampered off. As we left, I saw my first live skunk sniffing around the garage. Up unitl then, I had only seen the roadkill version of this mal-odourous animal. It had two stripes down it's back - apparently that makes it an american skunk. I guess canadian skunks only have one stripe (like 'pepe la peu' from the looney tune cartoons- he must have been french canadian) .

A visit from Nana and Papa
Their first day here, Evelyn had her graduation. The second day, we participated in the PlayGroup Walk-A-Thon. The highlight for the kids was the helium filled balloons. Both kids managed to loose a balloon at some point during the walk. (Note the cowboy theme on the balloon- I think I might pick some up for Magna Bay).
After walking, we went to a local park to play for a while.
